Something New

Tired of reading the same old cheesy romance novels? Sick of listening to the same old rap music? Then switch gears and try something new! It’s true that doing the same thing over and over again can be pretty monotonous. So what’s wrong with shaking things up a little bit? Get out of your comfort zone and go crazy over something different then what you’re used to. Try some of these suggestions:

Books: Okay, you could just about DIE if you read another Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants book. If you’re bored of everything being realistic, then let your imagination run wild and try the Pendragon series! The legacy begins with a teenage boy named Bobby Pendragon, who lives a fairly normal life. He does well in school, is captain of the high school basketball team, and just kissed the girl of his dreams, Courtney Chetwynde. Then one day, his uncle takes him to a subway called the Bronx and is mysteriously transported to another world called Denduron. Through his uncle, Bobby discovers the reason he is there, what his destiny is, and what it means to be a Traveler. He’s got to save the universe, one world at a time. Good luck, Pendragon!

Not interested? Then try something witty and clever (and more than a little odd), like Hitch-Hiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Ever wonder what it’s like to travel the universe? This book tells a story of a man named Arthur Dent, who was forced to travel the universe because the Earth has been unexpectedly blown up. His only hopes for survival are a friend he doesn’t understand (and who is also from somewhere in the vicinity of Beetlegeuse), a spacecraft which runs on an improbability drive, and a guide of the universe with the words “Don’t Panic” inscribed in large, friendly letters on the cover. Good luck to you too, Arthur Dent. You’re really going to need it.

Music: Hate to break it to you, but rap music and nasty pop music get really tiring after a while. If you’re looking for something new, try (dare I say it) a great country band! Not really your thing? You’d be surprised how many bands you thought were rock or pop and actually turn out to be country. A great band to try is Rascal Flatts. They wrote the song “Life is a Highway” from the movie Cars. Some absolutely fabulous songs are “What Hurts The Most”, “My Wish”, “Backwards”, “Pieces”, and “I Feel Bad.”

Still not your cup of tea? Then go where no teen has gone before, and try out some older music! I know that sounds strange, but some older bands are better than you think. One of the greatest older bands ever known to mankind is Genesis. This is a rock band, and their songs are filled with meaning, but some of them are also ironic and funny. Some great songs for this band are “Turn it On Again”, “Follow You, Follow Me”, “I Can’t Dance”, “Invisible Touch”, “Ripples”, “Entangled”, and “Land of Confusion.” Try them out! You’d be amazed at how tremendous they are!
